Real Club Valderrama is the most famous golf course in Spain and one of the most respected in Europe. It was here in 1997 that Seve Ballesteros captained Europe to victory in the first Ryder Cup ever played in continental Europe.
The course opened in 1974 as Las Aves, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and was later remodelled by him and renamed Valderrama. It became the home of the Volvo Masters, the season finale of the European Tour, and has since hosted World Golf Championships and other professional events.
The course
Valderrama is not especially long, but it is precise and demanding. Narrow fairways wind between hundreds of ancient cork oaks, the greens are small, firm and fast, and the bunkering is strategic. Accuracy from the tee and a sharp short game matter far more than power. The presentation is immaculate all year round.
Playing Valderrama as a visitor
Valderrama is a private club, but it does accept visitors on a limited number of tee times. The green fee is among the highest in Europe, and the course has its own rules for visitors, including handicap requirements. We'll confirm the current conditions when we prepare your proposal.
Our advice: tell us early that Valderrama is on your list and be slightly flexible about the day. We'll secure the round first and build the rest of your trip around it.
Combine it with
Valderrama is the centrepiece of a golf holiday in Sotogrande. Within a few minutes you can also play Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, La Reserva and Almenara, and Finca Cortesín is about 20 minutes away.
