If there is one place on the Costa del Sol every golfer should play at least once, it is Sotogrande. In a few square kilometres of rolling cork-oak country you'll find the most famous course in Spain, the first European design of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and a handful of modern championship layouts.
Sotogrande is a private, green and peaceful resort at the western end of the Costa del Sol, in the province of Cádiz. It is quieter than Marbella and centred on golf, polo and the marina, which makes it ideal for golfers who want the best courses and a calm place to stay.
Golf courses in Sotogrande
- Real Club Valderrama: host of the 1997 Ryder Cup, the first played in continental Europe, and of many Volvo Masters. Visitor tee times are limited, so plan early.
- Real Club de Golf Sotogrande: opened in 1964, Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s first design in Europe and a true classic.
- La Reserva Club: a modern, beautifully maintained course with sweeping views towards the sea, pictured above.
- Almenara: 27 holes designed by Dave Thomas, set around a hotel.
- San Roque Club and the seaside La Hacienda Links courses complete one of the richest concentrations of golf in Europe.

You can stay in Sotogrande itself, in a golf hotel with the first tee next door or a smaller hotel close to the marina. Many golfers also combine Sotogrande with a base in Estepona or Marbella, playing the famous courses on day trips. We'll suggest the option that best suits your group and the courses on your list.
Valderrama: how to get a tee time
Valderrama is a private club with limited visitor times, and the green fee is among the highest in Europe. Our advice is simple: tell us as early as possible that you'd like to play it, and be a little flexible with the date. We'll build the rest of your trip around that round.
Off the course
The Sotogrande marina is lined with restaurants and terraces, the beaches are long and quiet, and the polo season brings a lively atmosphere in summer. Gibraltar, the white town of Castellar and the beaches of Tarifa are all within easy reach.
